The Peruvian Hats
Peru is known for wondeful hats, caps, chullos, vibrant colors, and warm people. The most famous Peruvian hat is the "Chullo". The Chullo hat is typically made from alpaca wool, and has flaps to cover the ears. Each flap is usually decorated with nice braded tassles or string with cute balls at the end. Peruvian artisans have perfected the art of making hats and as a result there are so many different types of Peruvian hats available.
Hats range from completely handmade, either crochet hats or knit hats, or machine made either via a traditional loom or machine produced. Peruvian hats are typically acrylic, alpaca wool, or a blend of both. Hats are commonly blended 30% alpaca wool and 70% acrylic to pick up the warmth of the alpaca wool while maintaining a hypoallergenic and non-itchy benefit. Since children can have allergy to 100% alpaca wool, children's hats are rarely 100% pure alpaca - usually a 30/70 blend.
Peru is well known for its skills with handmade crochet clothing and hats. We are so impressed when we travel to Peru and meet the artisans making the hats we sell on "Peruvian-Hats". Often times the artisans will be busy making hats while we are talking with them. The artisans are so skilled with the crochet needlework.
